The 110 foot Providence sails past Newport Bridge during Tall Ships Newport Salute 2000. Providence is a replica built in 1976 of one of the most historic ships of the American Navy, the sloop Katy, the first vessel selected for the Continental Navy and the first command of John Paul Jones, who nicknamed it "Lucky Sloop." As a Revolutionary War vessel, Providence carried 12 cannons and captured or sunk more than 40 British ships. The ship is operated by the Providence Maritime Heritage Foundation and the City of Providence. As Rhode Island's flagship, Providence serves youngsters and adults through the Classroom Under Sail program. |
